Welcome to Early Years!
We have two wonderful Reception classes that make up our Early Years at St Christopher's- Cygnets and Ducklings. The curriculum that we follow has been carefully designed by a range of stakeholders within the school - including governors, staff and subject leads- to ensure that our youngest children make the best possible start to life at school.
Children follow our school-wide phonics scheme - Sounds-Write - to enable them to become expert readers and writers, and through the Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC), they develop their personal, social and emotional development within exciting topics such as Space, Transport and Kings & Queens. The PKC is a knowledge-rich curriculum, and the learning that children complete in Early years, is foundational to that of the rest of the school.
Our two classrooms and shared outdoor learning environment has been carefully designed to ensure that children can access the provision with independence, and is enhanced through daily enhancements in the form of 'Rainbow Challenges'. These challenges are carefully designed to provide children opportunities to consolidate previous learning, or to apply newly developed skills.
Each week, children in Cygnets and Ducklings take part in 'Welly Wednesday' where children will spend at least part of the day outdoors in our small woodland area. Children will build dens, play games, and complete maths and phonics lessons in nature, and will even go on 'Welly walks' around the village to complete special missions such as hunt for different shaped road signs, or find words within the locality!
If you have a child that is due to start in Reception Class, we would love to show you around our school. Please contact Mrs Evans in our school office to arrange this.
